Well, I guess in reality worrying about this baby actually started back when I was 17 and just starting to daydream about how our life would be together. That was back when everything was a hypothetical - when we get married, when we buy a house, when we have a baby.
Not so hypothetical anymore!!!! It's funny how the time just ticks by and never stops. Sometimes I feel so impatient to meet this little miracle growing inside me, but then I stop and think - seven months from now it'll be over, baby will be here, and I won't be pregnant anymore. And seven months from that, I'll have an honest-to-goodness little person on my hands! So I vacillate between excitement and impatience to something like fear and the desire to sink my heels in and stop time.
The worry that's got me down (if you could really describe any of my moods as "down" right now - more like mildly bothered) right now is finances. I'm sure all the expectant mommies of the internets can agree with me that it is slightly unnerving to think of bringing a baby into the world at this particular moment in time. I constantly hear about layoffs, lack of jobs, and a poor economy. Being in HR, I'm sure you can imagine this is even more apparent in my life.
So today I'm going to start to work on getting our budget pared down. No more needless meals out, cutting cable in the guest room (can someone tell me why we have cable in the guest room again?), checking into our auto insurance policies. I need to finish our taxes so we can get our return. Definitely time to get some sort of college savings plan started, set up the 529. And of course we'll have to look into wills, life insurance, and retirement savings for me.
I'm also quite nervous about going from two salaries to one. I'm sure we can do it, considering we've been planning for it for years, and did it throughout the first two years of living together, but I'm still nervous. I feel like we use my money now and we really didn't used to. It used to all go into savings.
But like I said, we're going to pare down the budget, see what we can cut, and go from there. It's exciting and amazing, but the weight of the responsibility is a bit overwhelming. I thought we had responsibility with the dog, the house, and all our bills, but that was really nothing.
