According to ABC News this morning, Fairfax County supervisors are considering some major cuts to make up for a $430 million budget shortfall. Among other great programs that are being considered for cuts is the SAFE program, a self-defense course for women run through the police department.
Abby and I participated in this program just a few months ago and I really think it was some of the most useful instruction I've received in my life. I could understand cutting it if only a few women utilized the program each month, but the class had around forty women in it when I went and seemed to filled to capacity. I could also understand cutting it if the information it provided was outdated or ineffective, but that certainly is not the case. The lessons taught in the course were very helpful and I now feel much more confident in my ability to defend myself.
Perhaps it is because I have completed this course and got so much out of it, but I really do not think this program should be cut by the county officials. I have a very hard time believing there aren't other items in the budget that are more wasteful and more deserving of some firming up.
If you live in Fairfax County, please consider dropping a line to your district supervisor.

Such a shame. I loved that program and certainly hope they change their minds. Thanks for letting us know.
