OK, this is going to be the one and only post I will put up regarding the results of this election.
I just cannot believe McCain lost. No, that's not quite right, I can believe it. People were sick of Bush and Republicans in general and unhappy with the economy. Obama out-raised and out-spent McCain by 2 to 1. He ran an impressive campaign and an incredibly organized and efficient grassroots effort. His use of the internet and networking sites was unparalleled. I just can't accept it.
And now it's over. After all this time, it's over. Yes, I'm proud that Americans saw past race to vote for a man who is a minority, but to be honest, I never really thought that would have a big impact anyway. Turns out those who said that Obama could lose up to 6% because of his race were dead wrong. Just 2% of voters said that race was the most important factor in their decision and of those, a majority voted for Obama.
Now here is what worries me:
- Pro-life values will disappear. Obama is to the left of even NARAL on abortion issues. What kind of a person does not want infants born alive of botched abortions to receive medical care??
- Taxes will be raised. Not immediately, but they will be raised. And no, I don't buy the "only people making over $250k will see an increase" bit. He's said he will raise the rates on the top two brackets -- the lower limit would only be $200k in that case. In some parts of the country (hint: where we live), $200k per year for a family really isn't THAT much. To give you some idea of the costs of things down here, we pay over $24,000 on our mortgage per year. And we have a very modest townhouse far from the city. Any increase on our taxes will put us in a precarious situation.
- Capital gains taxes will be raised. If you are like us and are chasing the American dream and have a little money in the bank to spare, odds are you have participated in or will someday participate in the stock market. Obama plans to nearly double the tax rate on capital gains.
- Radicals will be in positions of influence. Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Rashid Khalidi, Jeremiah Wright, etc., etc. Unrepentant terrorists, a man with links to the PLO, and a blatant racist will have the ear of the most powerful man in the country.
- We will lose the war in Iraq by withdrawing too soon. Those of you who knew me back in high school may remember that I was very much against going to war with Iraq at that time. We had one front to focus on and really needed to work to protect our country domestically. Now that we are there, however, we must see it through. If we leave too prematurely, before the Iraqis have the ability to govern themselves, we will soon see Iraq become a breeding ground for Al-Qaeda and other radical Islamic groups.
At this point, I can only pray that the Lord has a plan for our country and that some good will come of this.
