3 Month Birthday!

Oh, little girl! Where do I begin? In some ways, it seems like she's changed so much in a month, but in other ways, she hasn't seemed to grow at all. We are definitely still in the weird preemie limbo, where she's been in our lives for three months, only acts like she's 1.5 months.

She hasn't quite gained as much weight as we'd like, but she did put on almost a pound. I forgot to get her length, but right now she's curled up in the Moby wrap, so I'll have to just edit the post with that info later. She's been on Prevacid for a few weeks now and that has made a huge difference - she went from crying all day and night to sleeping through the night (though not regularly yet) and taking regular, long naps. We've learned that missing her first morning nap will ruin the whole day. She was able to meet more family and friends on ur most recent trip to Connecticut and celebrated her first Thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for this year.

In the past month, she's also matured mentally quite a bit as well. She now really enjoys her mobile and her play mat. She still doesn't like tummy time, but we hold her upright in a "sitting" position as much as we can throughout the day and get her to use her neck muscles in other ways. Her new favorite way to be held is facing out. She'll snuggle into my chest if she's tired and wants to block out the world, but if she's alert or if there are new sights to be seen, she wants to be able to see them. We took her to the grocery store a few days ago and she had a ball looking at all the different items with their flashy colors.

It's hard to believe that in less than one month, Ellie will be four months old. The pediatrician at our last appointment said we could start her on solids when she's four months old, but I think I'm going to hold off. She'll likely still be under 10lbs at that point and since there are already concerns about her weight gain, I think it's prudent to give her breast milk only as long as possible. I'll probably start her on solids around 6 months of age, which will still only be 4.5 months when adjusted for her prematurity. I may even hold off until 6 months adjusted, based on how Ellie's doing at the time. There are lots of organizations promoting delaying starting solids for many different reasons, if you're interested in this, you can read more about it here: http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/delay-solids.html.

Weight: 7lb 4oz

Height: 18.5in

Size: Newborn

Milestones: Nothing too exciting. She's much more alert now and for longer periods. She's starting to get more interactive and really enjoys looking at new things and being in new places. She now follows mobiles in circles over her head with her eyes. She can hold her head stead for longer periods of time.

Likes: She likes physical activities, like being held in a sitting position or even in a standing position. She enjoys sitting in her Bumbo seat and absolutely loves being in new places. So much so that she'll often refuse to nap if we are in a new or different situation/place.

Dislikes: She still hates tummy time, but what can you do? I don't know too many babies who love it, especially not at this age. She doesn't seem to like her car seat, either. She just doesn't seem to like being buckled into it, since she will nap on it with a blanket over the buckles from time to time. She still doesn't care to sleep in her crib or Pack N Play, though she does love her mobiles in both.
